Welcome to the 2nd European workshop on novel aspects of Nanomedicine entitled ”Nanomedicine Now – The Challenge to Translate Scientific Results to Applications for patients”.

Six years after the first Council of Europe workshop in Nanomedicine, the development of this important field has greatly advanced both in research and industry. The pharma-industry recognizes a market with high perspectives.

The hurdles to come from scientific findings to market with drugs and devices are identified: Characterization and toxicology of materials and drugs, the definition of side effects, biocompatibility and biodegradability of materials, production of particles in larger amounts, the principles of the translation, drug targeting strategies and the regulatory accreditation of products are the bang up-to-date challenges of the next years.

It took about 15 years to introduce Biotechnology to the large pharmaceutical companies; Nanomedicine is presently at the timeline to start-up due to the common interest of all stakeholders to advance in the field.

Novel apectsThe European Policy– and Decision-makers, European parliamentary members and experts in politics and government, but also scientists interested in the field, that have great interest for clearness, at what actual stage the development of this cutting edge field of medicine is.

The organizers of this meeting have invited highly recognized specialists to debate the current status quo and the expected perspectives for the next five years.

The workshop is a contribution to the expediting of the use of Nanomedicine to the benefit of the patients and again: Longer lasting health in age.

Here are some highlights and comments from the meeting reported by Ulf G Andersson, chairman of NanoMed North:

Nanomedicine – a highly diverse and unified field

A range of qualified speakers from all over Europe brought up various important aspects of nanomedicine
Once again, it became very clear that nanomedicine is an extremely technology diverse area. But the stakeholders in the nanomedicine field are united by many common challenges such as a number of clinical unmet needs, regulatory aspects, registration procedures, complex reimbursement systems and ultimately the fact that these products and technologies are to be used in humans.

Plans of a European nanomedical “meta-network”

Klaus-Michael Weltring from ETPN presented the major European national and sub-regional communities within nanomedicine. He suggested to build a European meta-network of the major initiatives. NanoMed North was explicitly mentioned as a very interesting initiative representing a model for the future with its content of activities, organisation and cross-border approach.

During a “Mirror-meeting” representatives from these European national and sub-regional communities met in order to outline a closer collaboration, very exciting!
We will keep you up to date with the development of the European nanomedicine meta-network.

Nanomedicine Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

Three different ETPN working groups; Nano-Diagnostics and Imaging, Nano-Therapeutics and Nano for Regenerative Medicine, presented their latest work and conclusions. The presentations were followed by a very active round table discussion about the potential content of the planned submission of a “Nanomedicine Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda”.
Several industrial presentations completed the meeting and added further inspiration and knowledge to the 120 participants.

Take active part in ETPN!

I can honestly recommend NanoMed North members to take active part in ETPN. This is the main organisation in Europe formulating strategic and detailed proposals within nanomedicine for EU in general and specifically for Horizon 2020. The influence from ETPN is significant.

Horizon 2020 – research and innovation to boost growth and jobs in Europe

”Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.

Horizon 2020 is open to everyone, with a simple structure that reduces red tape and time so participants can focus on what is really important. This approach makes sure new projects get off the ground quickly – and achieve results faster.”

How to get funding

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
Two year work programmes announce the specific areas that will be funded by Horizon 2020. Look out for them on the online Participant Portal as they can be used as a calendar for the calls for proposals (‘calls’), to be published during the year. The Participant Portal is your entry point for electronic administration of EU-funded research and innovation projects, and hosts the services for managing your proposals and projects throughout their lifecycle.

Each call gives more precise information on the questions that the Commission would like you to address in your proposals. All calls can be found in the EU’s Official Journal – the official source for all EU documents – as well as on the Participant Portal

FDA issues guidance to support the responsible development of nanotechnology products

FDA News Release • June 24, 2014

Today, three final guidances and one draft guidance were issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration providing greater regulatory clarity for industry on the use of nanotechnology in FDA-regulated products.

One final guidance addresses the agency’s overall approach for all products that it regulates, while the two additional final guidances and the new draft guidance provide specific guidance for the areas of foods, cosmetics and food for animals, respectively.

Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that allows scientists to create, explore and manipulate materials on a scale measured in nanometers—particles so small that they cannot be seen with a regular microscope. The technology has a broad range of potential applications, such as improving the packaging of food and altering the look and feel of cosmetics.

“Our goal remains to ensure transparent and predictable regulatory pathways, grounded in the best available science, in support of the responsible development of nanotechnology products,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “We are taking a prudent scientific approach to assess each product on its own merits and are not making broad, general assumptions about the safety of nanotechnology products.”
The three final guidance documents reflect the FDA’s current thinking on these issues after taking into account public comment received on the corresponding draft guidance documents previously issued (draft agency guidance in 2011; and draft cosmetics and foods guidances in 2012).

The FDA does not make a categorical judgment that nanotechnology is inherently safe or harmful, and will continue to consider the specific characteristics of individual products. All four guidance documents encourage manufacturers to consult with the agency before taking their products to market. Consultations with the FDA early in the product development process help to facilitate a mutual understanding about specific scientific and regulatory issues relevant to the nanotechnology product, and help address questions related to safety, effectiveness, public health impact and/or regulatory status of the product.

Realizing Reformulation

– A symposium on surface and materials chemistry

  • Date: Wed, 2014-10-22 – Fri, 2014-10-24
  • Location: Lund
  • Country: Sweden

Formulations are advanced mixtures of chemicals, designed to achieve or improve functional performance. Formulation science is highly interdisciplinary, encompassing surface and colloid science, material science, chemical engineering, biotechnology and so on. The challenges are ubiquitous in industry, where examples include formulating a pharmaceutical drug into a pill that dissolves in the right place and at the right speed in the body, formulating pulp to make efficient use of cellulose fibres in paper, formulating a paint that also has antimicrobial functions, or formulating a freezable low-fat mayonnaise. The challenges that one faces in these and other applications are often very closely related to fundamental problems in in surface- colloid- and material- chemistry.

2014 Symposium on surface and material chemistry is devoted to the broad topic Realizing Reformulation. The focus lies on generic aspects of formulations that are relevant to many different applications, and the scientific themes include:

• Concepts for reformulation
• Triggered transitions to control functionality
• Soft Matter Interfaces
• Formulation interactions with biosystems and biomoleculesE014635

The program include international and national leading experts from academia and industry together with young researcher from Swedish universities. The Akzo Nobel prize winners will also be presented.

Scientific contribution
Considerable time will be allocated to poster presentations and we invite such contributions from both academia and industry.

Venue
The meeting will take place at Lund University in Lund, Sweden.
